Incompatible Rh factor usually not problematic with 1st pregnancy, as mother’s body produces unwanted antibodies after delivery. To prevent production of the antibodies, a special serum is given after each delivery. If the mother develops antibodies during the 1st pregnancy or antibody production is not prevented, then the 2nd baby onwards is monitored. If necessary, in order to remove and replace a large volume of the infant’s blood, the unborn baby can be given a transfusion or born baby can be given an exchange transfusion.
